Friday Leftovers

New York backs same-sex marriages from elsewhere. Now the state of New York will recognise same-sex marriages from other states and countries. How fabulous is that?
Parents who have lost children in the recent China quake are eligible to have another child. Maybe later they will remove the one-child policy altogether.

Brutal Honesty

In 1997, the musician Momus released the song “The Age of Information”. The tune is eerie. Gentle, sustained tones accompany a hushed, dispassionate voice. Electronic sounds—bleeps and bloops—trickle faintly in the background. The tone is calm, soothing, even as the lyrics list warning after warning about online life. In 1997, the [...]

This Has Been My Savior

Sunday, I woke up with a sore throat and runny nose. I didn’t want to miss the day of shadowing at the birthing pavilion, so I cleared out my sinuses, had some breakfast, and hopped into the beaten silver Toyota. At the hospital, I stubbornly ignored the pain and sniffling. A few [...]

Hospital Life is Not Like House or ER Either

Mother: What is this? Going into labor is nothing like what you see on TV.

Now if I could get my parakeets to recite names and addresses, I’ll have my own little live phonebooks. [...]

You Shouldn’t Give Me Ideas

Al: Are you taking pictures of my breasts?
Me: Now I am.
Al: You’re not going to put that on your blog, are you?
Me: Now I am.

For Me?

Byrnes sent flowers last Friday, after a very teary talk, but I haven’t been able to enjoy them until today because I was either at work or in Boston. While I was gone, my father had been tending the flowers for me. I have great men in my life.

Brambles of Hanover

The other place of employment. By the time this entry posts, I will be setting up the outside display.
This store has been here for over seven years, and I haven’t noticed it until this summer. You look at the world differently when you are looking for “Help Wanted” signs.
